The Elie Cartan Institute of Nancy (IECN) brings together all the mathematics researchers of the Universities and EPST of Nancy. The mathematics tradition is strong in Nancy. The Elie Cartan Institute bears the name of a very famous mathematician who greatly contributed to the development of this discipline in Lorraine over one century ago. In the 1950s, under the impetus of Jean Delsarte (one of the founders of the Bourbaki group), Laurent Schwartz, Jean Dieudonné, Jacques-Louis Lions, etc… Nancy was one of the great places of worldwide mathematicians. The 100 year celebration of math in Nancy, organised in 2003, retraced this history.
