Supported by nearly 4000 scientists, the research activity in the Lorraine region distinguishes itself in numerous domains. It implicates the totality of the universities and EPST (Public Institutions of Scientific or Technological Character) as well as most of the territory's schools through around one hundred laboratories.
 
The region has organised its scientific potential in centres of research around 5 PRST (Centres of Scientific and Technological Research). They are interested in the materials, health, environment, computing and humanities sectors. In addition, 2 centres of competitive excellence develop close links between the laboratory and business worlds.
 
The different platforms  assure the pooling of means and competences for the service of pure scientific research or the transfer of technology towards the economy.
 
The researchers in Lorraine are finally implicated in numerous international projects and networks . Their participation in different European programs anchors the region at the heart of the Europe of knowledge.
