Lorraine Doctorials : "favouring professional insertion"

It is the annual meeting of research students in Lorraine. Each year since 1997, the Doctorials have been the occasion for students to discover companies and work on innovative projects.

For their 13th edition, the Lorraine Doctorials were bursting at the seams again. The 17th and from 22nd to 27th May 2011, 85 students participated in this event organised by the UHP, Nancy II, the INPL, the UPV-M, the CIES and the CRED. " It is a great coming together aimed at all research students, all disciplines and all nationalities" explained Bernard Vitoux, CIES* director and event organiser. The main objective of this event? Makes research students aware of what awaits them on the job market : "There are about 10,000 thesis upheld each year in France for only 2500 positions in the public sector ! The numerous possibilities of working within companies or services must not be dismissed. The Doctorials are the occasion to find out more on this subject and discover the prospects".

For one week, students were brought together in total immersion at the Ermitage du Frère Joseph (Brother Joseph’s Hermitage) in Ventron (88). Catherine, 25, is a research student in psychology at Nancy II. She was impressed by the seminar programme : "We visited companies working on transgenic plants and cosmetology. It was a real discovery of the private sector for me ! We also met former research students who have created their own companies. I gleaned a lot of advice concerning recruitment, company needs, innovative logic, etc." Notions that everybody was able to put into practice during the high point of the week : the elaboration of innovative projects. In small groups, under the watchful eye of company bosses, the research students imagined a marketable product together. "Not easy when you don’t all have the same competences and there is no specific framework. You can go off in any direction !" tells Catherine.

Heterogeneity wished for by the organisers of the Doctorials : "Thanks to this, the students come up with very interesting propositions. We are impressed every time by their thought and reflection" explains Bernard Vitoux. This year, the groups particularly rivalled each other as far as imagination is concerned : solar products that adapt to the level of sunlight, chips against addictions, and even a contraceptive ring. Catherine’s group cooked up the idea of an intelligent hob. "A priori, it had nothing to do with my psychology course ! Naturally, I led the brainstorming sessions, chaired the discussion. What I really appreciated was observing that quite quickly everybody found their place within the group and contributed their knowledge to it ". The work was then presented to a jury of professionals. A high point for Catherine : "This experience made me realise my skills and the possibilities of developing them within a company."
