University residences

Managed by the CROUS (Regional Centre of University and School Works), the university student halls propose individual furnished rooms of 9 to 18 m². The CROUS also manages a residential park of studios and small apartments in approved residences or in low-income housing. Requests for university student housing are made by filing a Dossier Social Etudiant (DSE, Application for grants and student housing).

Student residences

More expensive than university housing, housing in private residences is often installed in recent buildings. Generally close to campus, they offer numerous services : cafeteria, laundry, TV room, Internet access, etc.

Hostels

Student hostels most often propose individual or double furnished rooms. Not all are co-ed and the admission conditions and the rules of daily life can be relatively strict there. These hostels often offer catering services, study rooms, and libraries.
The Young Workers Hostels also host student interns; they must be under 30 years old.

Financial aid

Destined for tenants, sub-letters or co-tenants, there exists two types of benefits: The APL (Personalised Housing Benefits) and the ALS (Social Welfare Housing Benefits). The APL is reserved for approved housing (which is the subject of an agreement between the owner and the state). Its amount is calculated according to resources, marital status and rent. The ALS is granted to tenants of non-approved housing under the condition that they answer to certain conditions of comfort and size. These 2 benefits cannot be concurrently drawn and are granted by the Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF, French Child Benefit Office).

Housing and foreign students

Lorraine Internationale brings personalised accompaniment to foreign students that are looking for housing in the region. It also proposes numerous practical sheets dedicated to the student visa and resident card, the opening of a bank account, health insurance…

Housing insurance

Insuring your housing is an obligation. At the delivery of the keys and then each year, the tenant must present proof of insurance to his lessor. Insurance companies propose "Multi-risk Habitation" insurance. In addition to the civil responsibility, they generally cover against fire, floods, theft and vandalism, and broken glass. The student mutuals MGEL or LMDE propose Multi-risk Habitation insurance to students at advantageous conditions.

Security deposit and guarantor

The signature of a rental contract often comes up against 2 difficulties: the payment of a security deposit and the presence of a guarantor. The security deposit corresponds to 1 month rent not including utilities. Often required by owners and real estate agencies, the guarantor commits to paying the rent and utilities in case of default on the part of the tenant. The guarantor must imperatively live and work in France and, in certain cases, earn up to 5 times the amount of the rent.

Granted to young people less than 30 years old working or looking for work and to students with State grants, the Loca-pass benefits facilitate access to housing :
The Loca-pass advance finances the security deposit thanks to a no interest loan over a maximum period of 3 years.
The Loca-pass guarantee acts as guarantor free of charge vis-à-vis the owner.
