Educate yourself to the world

Lorraine is the only region in France to share its borders with 3 countries, which naturally leads to a strong international opening of Lorraine’s postsecondary educational system. Within the Greater Region , Lorraine thus works towards the development of interuniversity cooperation. Around sixty educational programs (co-graduations) are jointly given by the postsecondary educational institutions from this transborder area bathed by the Rhine, the Moselle, the Saar and the Meuse.

With " The University of the Greater Region ", European cooperation, as far as postsecondary education is concerned, takes a step forward. This scientific and university cooperation project associates the universities of Saarbruck, Liège, Luxembourg, Metz, Nancy, Trier and Kaiserslautern. The objective is to create a cross-border university space that will facilitate the mobility of students whose degrees and diplomas will from now on bear the seal of the Greater Region. The University of the Greater Region is in line with the European program Interreg IV-A. Its budget is around 6 000 000 Euros over 3.5 years (2008 - 2011). This scientific and university network project is co-financed by the Lorraine Regional Council and falls within the framework of the Interreg IV-A European programme.

This project, as is the case for all cross-border academic and scientific cooperation action, is largely supported by the action of the Greater Region Research and Higher Education Working Group.

In the region, the teaching of languages and culture is on the program of numerous curricula. Each year schools and universities welcome over 6 000 French and foreign students. They actively participate in the programs for the education and research of the European Union. The University of Lorraine was amongst the first to offer an Master Erasmus Mundus Master degree, the high quality European masters launched in 2004.
