Greater Region Networks

Exchanges and cooperation at the heart of Europe

Exchanges as far as research and postsecondary education are concerned are one of the priorities of this vast trans-border space of cooperation that makes up the Greater Region , territory formed by Saarland, Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Wallonia.

Today uniting 13 postsecondary educational institutions, the University Cooperation Charter contributes to establishing the framework for these interregional scientific and university exchanges.

Nicknamed the virtual university, " The University of the Greater Region " is an ambitious project of scientific and university cooperation. It associates the universities of Saarbruck, Liège, Luxembourg, Metz, Nancy, Trier and Kaiserslautern. Their objective: To create an attractive and competitive cross-border space. As far as research is concerned, it foresees, for example, the creation of common doctoral education, summer schools, the implementation of common quality standards etc. The University of the Greater Region is in line with the European program Interreg IV-A. Its budget is around 6 000 000 Euros over 3.5 years (2008 - 2011). The project is co-financed by the Lorraine Region.

The implementation of these cooperative initiatives is largely supported by the action of the Greater Region Research and Higher Education Working Group .
