Presentation of the structure

The Regional Council intervenes in numerous domains of the daily life of the people in Lorraine and thereby contributes to their future. Decentralization reinforced the power of the Regional Council. Economic development, innovation, postsecondary education and research figure in the first line of its actions.
Innovation and knowledge play a key role in economic growth; this is why the Regional Council made innovation one of its priorities and strongly supports the development of the economy and knowledge. Lorraine has a double advantage at its disposal : a significant education and research potential and a dense fabric of competitive SME-SMI.

On the strength of this potential, the regional political will passes by 2 major axes :
- Support for research and postsecondary education by reinforcing the attractiveness of the Lorraine system ;
- Creation of innovative businesses and development by the innovation of existing businesses (reinforcement of Lorraine businesses’ capacities of innovation, accompaniment of businesses in all the steps of the innovation process, favouring the emergence of networks or "clusters").

A few actions supported or implemented by the Regional Council of Lorraine :

- In order to help businesses in the growth by innovation strategy, the Regional Council of Lorraine is endowed with a competitive financing tool, the FRIL, Regional Funds for Innovation in Lorraine, fruit of the partnership with OSEO. The Regional Council also intervenes in the structuring of the innovation actors so as to create conditions favourable to the emergence of individual as well as collective projects (notably within the centres of competitive excellence). On this last point, the Regional Council is also one of the principal financers of the Materalia and Fibres Greater-East projects.

- In order to support the attractiveness of research and postsecondary education in Lorraine, the Regional Council supports the international and European mobility of students with mobility grants and Erasmus co-financing. In addition, it supports the structuring of research in Lorraine with the support brought to the Jean Lamour Institute (Materials, Metallurgy, Nanosciences, Plasma, Surfaces), the ISEETECH project (European Institute of Business and its Technologies) and the Artem project (Art, Technology, Management). The objective is to develop a quality educational offer as well as research projects in accord with the needs of businesses.

The Lorraine Region accompanies projects internationally within the framework of the cooperation agreements signed with 6 foreign regions but also on an exceptional title in other regions of the world (areas with a high growth rate, projects meriting Lorraine expertise and know-how). Assistance in identifying partners, financing actions, putting together a subsidies application, making connections... Regional support can be practiced further along (support for exploratory or preparatory missions), putting a project together or during the realization phase.
