The ENSGSI : producing innovators

Le 18/11/2011

Industrial projects and missions, double-diplomas, transfer and innovation workshops… the Ecole Nationale Supérieure for Industrial Systems Engineering trains engineers to pilot innovative and development projects. Some details with Pascal Lhoste, head of this Grande Ecole in Nancy.

Each year about 80 "innovation managers" are trained who go on to careers in the industrial and tertiary sectors both in France and abroad. The Ecole Nationale Supérieure for Industrial Systems Engineering trains engineers destined to pilot innovation and development projects within international groups, SME and SMI. "Our objective is to train future managers capable of integrating themselves into any professional environment in order to manage innovative projects explains Pascal Lhoste, head of the ENSGSI. We concentrate on a pedagogy "via action", personal development and a strongly scientific curriculum". Other establishment strong point: it offers 3 doubles-diplomas in partnership with universities in Germany, Spain and Colombia. "Our students can multiply their possibilities and open the door to international careers" states the head who wishes to widen this choice with universities in Argentina, Chile, Brazil...

"Our students work directly on industrial problems very early on"

"At the ENSGSI, business is not just a field of study. As a real partner, it is at the heart of the pedagogy and participates actively in the development of the school and its future engineers". The school thus very quickly implicates its students in industrial projects. In the 1st year, in groups of 4 or 5, each student carries out a "performance optimisation project" on an existing system, for example improving a production system or reorganising a purchasing department. In the 2nd year, they undertake an "innovation centred project" on the latest generation of new ideas right through to a prototype of a new product or an acceptability study on a target market. In the 3rd year of the engineering curriculum, during an industrial mission which last 8 months, each student, alone in the company, must achieve the objectives set by the industrialist and the school. "This mission is a progressive transition towards industrial responsibility and also allows them to be confronted their professional project with real world realities. 60 % of students are taken on even before finishing their course and obtaining their diploma " points out Pascal Lhoste.
